What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a clear aligner that snaps onto the teeth to straighten or change their position. Think of it as braces but with different technology. Instead of having bands and brackets made of metal, it's done with clear plastic, hence the brand name Invisalign. Most of the time, you don't see it.
How does Invisalign compare to traditional braces?
Invisalign is similar to traditional braces in that it straightens teeth. The cost tends to be a little higher than traditional braces, but in many cases, it can be done faster and more comfortably. As far as dentistry hands go, Invisalign is a better product in most cases than traditional braces.
Is Invisalign really faster than braces?
Speed-wise, Invisalign is usually faster but not always. There are cases where using wires and metal is quicker. However, for small movements, Invisalign is typically much quicker than traditional braces.
Why is Invisalign often considered more comfortable than braces?
Invisalign is often considered more comfortable because it moves one or two teeth at a time, allowing for targeted and precise adjustments. With traditional braces, an arch wire forces every tooth to move at the same time, which involves a lot more movement and can cause soreness. Invisalign, or clear aligner therapy, is much more comfortable in most cases.
How long does Invisalign take to straighten teeth?
The duration really depends on how much movement needs to happen. The best way to find out is to come in for a scan, which we'll do digitally. We'll then send the plan to our clear aligner provider and give you an estimate of how long it will take.
What is the process involved in Invisalign treatment?
The first step is coming in for a diagnosis to determine what we're trying to accomplish and ensure we're using the right tool for the job. We take an intraoral scan—no goopy impressions, just a quick, flavorless scan. Once we have that digital scan, we send it to the cloud and start tweaking it to make our plan for the clear aligners. This process usually takes about a week. At the end of the week, we bring you back in to show you the end result, discuss the timeline, and then we order the aligners.
What are Invisalign trays, and how many will I need?
Invisalign trays are clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth to straighten them. Invisalign is a brand of tray, but there are many out there, and they're all pretty good. How many you need depends on how many teeth need to be moved and how far they need to move. It's best to come in so we can show you what it takes to move the teeth and how long it will take.
Do I sleep with Invisalign?
Great question. Absolutely, you must wear clear aligners throughout the day, including while sleeping. The bare minimum is 18 hours a day, but you'll get better results if you only take them out for eating and brushing. The longer you wear them throughout the day, the more predictable the results will be.
Is there anything that could disqualify me from using Invisalign?
Some factors can disqualify someone from using Invisalign. First, we need to assess whether it's a good product to deliver the desired results based on the position of the teeth. Second is compliance; if you know you're not going to wear them, they won't work. Traditional braces are glued on and require less compliance. Lastly, we need to ensure there's no decay, as it can spread faster during aligner or braces therapy. Once these issues are addressed, you should be a good candidate for care.
Can Invisalign fix a crossbite?
Invisalign can fix some minor crossbites, but for major ones, it's not usually the tool of choice. When the lower jaw's position is significantly different from the upper jaw, surgery might be necessary to reposition the jaw before using Invisalign for straightening. Sometimes, we plan not to address skeletal differences fully, aiming for a functional, aesthetically pleasing result without surgery. In such cases, Invisalign is still an option.
Does most dental insurance cover the cost of Invisalign?
Dental insurance usually doesn't differentiate between Invisalign, other clear aligners, or traditional braces. Most insurances cover one instance of orthodontic care per person, but coverage varies. It's best to come in with your insurance card, and we can check what your insurance covers.
How much does Invisalign cost without dental insurance?
In our office, the cost is about $6,500 for braces, whether it's Invisalign or banded brackets. Prices vary depending on location and the specifics of the treatment, ranging from about $5,500 to $8,500.
