Deep cleaning versus routine cleaning. What's the difference?
You've probably heard about deep cleaning and regular cleaning, and it can get a bit confusing. Let me explain what a deep cleaning is. A deep cleaning involves going underneath the gums. If you've ever heard the phrase "getting long in the tooth," it refers to losing bone around the teeth. When we lose bone or have deep pocketing around our gums, that's when a deep cleaning is needed to clean out all the tartar, calculus, and bacteria that build up. You'll notice your breath will be better afterward, and it will improve your bone and gum health. If you're ready to move forward or have additional questions, give us a call at Farmington Family Dental at 573-756-5760.
What is a deep cleaning compared with a regular cleaning?
A regular cleaning is when you see your hygienist, and she cleans off the tartar that sits mostly on the lower front area. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes, depending on how sticky the tartar is, and it involves cleaning above the gums. A deep cleaning, however, goes underneath the gums on the root surface of the tooth, usually requiring anesthetic to make it comfortable. It takes more time and is often needed for new adult patients in our office. It typically involves a couple of appointments to clean the full mouth.
Why is dental deep cleaning necessary?
A deep cleaning is needed to restore you back to health. Until the bacteria underneath the gums are cleaned out, they'll keep producing toxins and poisons in your mouth. It's important to clean off the bacteria and tartar to restore gum health and stop bone loss.
How long can I go without a dental cleaning?
You can go as long as you want, similar to going between oil changes, but eventually something expensive might happen. We usually recommend visiting every six months, or more frequently if necessary, to maintain your teeth and smile.
How painful is a dental cleaning?
A dental cleaning shouldn't hurt much at all. We usually perform it without anesthetic, and it might feel like a little pinch. Overall, people walk out feeling amazing, like a million bucks.
Why do my teeth feel weird after cleaning?
After cleaning, teeth feel different because the tartar that builds up is removed, revealing a smooth, slick surface underneath, similar to washing your car.
How much does a dental cleaning cost?
The cost can vary. We have an in-house plan for maintenance, around $300 per year as of 2024, subject to inflation. We also offer a new patient special. Call Farmington Family Dental at (573) 756-5760 to get set up for your cleaning.
How do I keep my teeth clean after a dental cleaning?
To maintain that amazing clean feeling at home, I recommend using an electric toothbrush. Look for one with a built-in timer and pressure sensor. We offer a great option at our office that meets these criteria. Using such a toothbrush can help keep your smile feeling fresh between professional cleanings.
